The stronger your muscles become with Yoga, the more they will tone your body and rid it of excess fat.

4. Yoga is a natural detoxification process.

With increased blood flow to all areas, it helps to eliminate toxins from your body.

5. Yoga can alleviate pain.

More and more physical therapists are recommending Yoga for at home therapy.

For instance, if you’ve hurt your back, a physical therapist can recommend very specific Yoga movements to help alleviate pain and strengthen the problem area.

6. Yoga relieves stress.

This is probably one of the biggest benefits of Yoga. Because of the breathing methods and stretching techniques you practice during Yoga, you can actually feel stress leaving your body.

7. Yoga harmonizes your body and mind as one.

With your mind aware of what your body is doing, you can reap the rewards of a whole body and mind workout.

Yoga classes often have relaxing music and dim lighting so your whole body and mind can relax and focus on the movements.

As mentioned above, the disadvantages of Yoga are few; however, there are some important points to note:

1. Use caution with Yoga headstands.

Some optometrists have warned that Yoga headstands could lead to glaucoma, but there haven’t been enough studies on this to draw a firm conclusion.

2. Be wary of Dahn Yoga.

Dahn Yoga is a Korean Yoga idea, whch may be nothing more than a sales pitch to get your money by putting the word “Yoga” in there. It seems to include a lot of counting and chanting with no focus on breathing.

3. Use caution with Bikram Yoga.

Bikram Yoga, also known as “Hot Yoga”, is performed in a hot room. Some doctors say this isn’t good for your body, while others say it is. You can avoid this controversy by simply sticking with the basics.

In summary, practicing yoga with a trained instructor can benefit your mind, body, and inner self. With yoga, you’ll be able to relieve stress, strengthen your muscles, and promote your health and well-being.

    1. Hi Kaitlyn. Here is a response to your comment courtesy of professional yoga instructor Laural Strang:

      In response to the question about “disadvantages to yoga therapy,” I would need to know specifically what kind of “yoga therapy” is being questioned. I will do my best to list all the disadvantages, in general, that I know.

      Yoga postures (sometimes referred to as “asanas”) are exercises and, therefore, have the same drawbacks of any exercises if taken too far: pulled muscles/ligaments/tendons. Some yoga practises pose more risk to physical injury than others.

      Bikram yoga (or “hot yoga”) is known to produce a cardiovascular workout; however, a person is more prone to injury in this type of class due to the room temperature. Exercising in a very hot room causes the muscles to become very hot and, therefore, allowing for a much deeper stretch. This initially sounds like a benefit, but actually it’s not. Muscles stretch, but ligaments and tendons don’t (much), so participants will tend to stretch further than the tendon or ligament will allow and they subsequently suffer from a strain, sprain or tear. These injuries take a long time to heal.

      Also, some Bikram instructors do not allow participants to hydrate their bodies (drink) during the class, which runs 90 minutes. Even though participants are advised to drink water prior to class, many people will not hydrate adequately, so they will require water during the class. In this case, it is not healthy to deprive the body of needed water, especially in a hot environment. Exercising in any overheated environment is generally recognized among fitness leaders as contraindicated.

      Another possible disadvantage of yoga is inadvertently getting into the wrong class. Yoga is very diverse. There as many different types of yoga as there are types of coffee at Starbucks. It’s important to attend the appropriate class. If you’re looking to get an intense physical workout, you would not want to attend a Kundalini class where much of the class is focused more on breathing and less on physical exercise.

      Furthermore, the degree of expertise of the instructor can play a significant role in how enjoyable, safe, and informative the class is. Choosing an instructor that doesn’t suit you can turn you off yoga altogether, so it is important to try out several different classes and talk to the instructor to find one you resonate with.

      One more disadvantage of yoga would be that the exercises could exacerbate an existing condition or re-injure prior injury. It is wise to consult a physician (who has some basic knowledge of yoga) to determine whether or not yoga exercises would be beneficial or detrimental. For example, people suffering from fibromyalgia should be very cautious if they begin a yoga program. They should either avoid yoga altogether, or be very gentle with the exercises to avoid discomfort.

      There are so many advantages to yoga that they overshadow the few disadvantages. If one honours their body as they proceed with yoga–or any exercise program–then they will enjoy the practise immensely. By “honour,” I mean this: listen to your body and do only what the body allows you to do. It is tempting to put the instructor’s suggestion ahead of your own inner voice. Always listen to your inner voice; it knows your body better than you think.
