Law of Attraction – Is LOA Truth Or Snake Oil?
The Law of Attraction – Something Old Is Something New
The law of attraction has become something of a fad as a result of the success of the 2006 film The Secret … and in many ways the law of attraction fad has run its course. There has been quite a negative backlash towards the concept and particularly towards many of the supposed gurus who have been cashing in on the law of attraction craze.

Yet, before you dismiss the notion that the law of attraction is simply a type of self help “snake oil” being shilled by snake oil salesmen, consider that the idea behind law of attraction has been around for thousands of years.
“As above, so below. As within, so without.”
— The Emerald Tablet, circa 3000 BC“Likes tend toward likes.”
— Plato
While the language and the labeling has changed … Plato’s was the first law of affinity … the message inherent in the law of attraction remains the same … and it has been a core message of all the great teachers throughout history.
“As a man thinketh in his heart so is he.”
— Proverbs 23:7
The truth is that we are all surrounded by thought energy — a thought atmosphere, if you will. And within this thought atmosphere, we’re either drawing in or pushing back.
The law of attraction is the principle by which you draw into your life that which is in vibrational alignment with who you are being: your thoughts, feelings, opinions and attitudes — whether you’re mindful of them or not.
In short, you become what you think about.
Taking Personal Responsibility For What You Have Attracted So Far
“Our thoughts are the tools with which you carve your life story on the substance of the universe. When you choose your thoughts, you choose results.”
— Imelda Shanklin
This is why becoming aware of and learning how to manage your thoughts and feelings is the starting point to successfully working with law of attraction and mastering manifestation. And part of that awareness is realizing that the you have literally created the results you have so far through your past thoughts and feelings.
This can be a tough pill to swallow, yet it is also liberating.
Why? Because with practice you have the ability to choose your thoughts … which means that you actually have the ability to ultimately change your results.
By deliberately framing your thoughts around your desires, you begin to breathe life into your dreams and fuel your imagination. Pretty soon, by staying connected to your desires at an ever deepening level, that breath fans a bright fire within yourself which carries you towards your goals.
Connecting With Your Desires
Connecting with your desires is as simple as asking yourself two simple questions:
- What do I really want?
- Why do I really want this?
Your answers will allow you to zero in on your passions, and your passions will elicit powerful emotions and feelings that will carry your imagination and thoughts towards more deliberate creation.
Applying Creative Visualization
Wallace Wattles wrote about the process of creative visualization in his book The Science of Getting Rich. He encouraged the daily practice of actively visualizing your desires, by using your imagination to engage all of your senses. Imagine not only the sights, but also the sounds, textures, smells and tastes of your dreams coming true.
To add even more power to the process, choose the thoughts feelings you have knowing the outcome you desire has manifested. These thoughts and feelings serve as the strongest “magnet” which attracts those desired outcomes and draws them towards you … hence, forming the essence of the law of attraction.
Understanding The Law of Attraction Cycle
The more effective you become at managing your thoughts, the more quickly the manifestation process will occur. Each time you recognize you have an incongruent or incompatible thought with you what you really want, literally stop and interrupt your thinking process. Say “stop” … whether out loud or silently to yourself … and immediately ask yourself “So, what do I really want?”
“The law of attraction is that our thinking creates and brings to us whatever we think about. It’s as though every time we think a thought, every time we speak a word, the universe is listening and responding to us.”
— Louise Hay (appearing on the Oprah Winfrey Show … original interview here)
Use this thought interruption technique as a way of realigning your thoughts. Over time you will get better at it. As you get better, your results will begin to align with your goals. As you notice your results are improving you will begin to feel better about things, making it easier to choose thoughts that align with your goals.
And so a positive attraction cycle is born.
By recognizing and being thankful for the abundance of good things you already have in your experience, you begin to invoke powerful feelings of gratitude which helps fuel your positive attraction cycle even further. And you will know without a doubt that the law of attraction is real.
