Does Personal Development Really Help Transform Lives?

Personal development, self development, self growth, self help – these are all terms that can be used somewhat interchangeably to describe an industry that has been often maligned, but which is also growing exponentially and now seems poised (with the advent of such phenomena as the film The Secret), to enter a new stage of heightened growth and mass consciousness.

The Critics ...

Critics of the personal development industry will assert that the ideas expressed within self help books and by inspirational speakers are misleading.  They will suggest that such programs offer "easy answers" that don't hold up to practical scrutiny and in fact prey upon the inherent psychological susceptibility of people.

Cynics suggest the only people being helped by the self growth books on the market are the authors who wrote them.  Or they argue that many of the principles behind personal development, such as Law of Attraction, are based on pseudo-science and without validity.

Personal Development Is A Genuine Movement

Yet for all of the detractors, there is a genuine movement afoot.  And it is clearly based on something people perceive as "real".  Something definitely is going on:  people's lives are being transformed.

And regardless of what critics may think of someone such as, say Tony (Anthony) Robbins – who has in a large way shaped the modern personal development industry – there is no denying that he has helped thousands upon thousands of people live better, happier, more successful lives.

Personal Evidence

And we need look no further than our own lives to find evidence of the transformation that is possible through the active practice of personal development.

Since leaping into the study and practice of personal development in 2004, we have personally witnessed a tremendous transformation.  We replaced an executive income with a home based business, have become happier people, better parents, created an unencumbered lifestyle where we are free to do what we want without asking permission from someone or asking to be allowed to take the time to do so, feel good about ourselves, help other people, and have nearly tripled our net worth.

So there is one thing we can say based on our personal experience the principles and daily practice of personal development and self growth absolutely work.

5 Principles For A Healthy Personal Develoment Practice

The daily practice of personal development – which we'll define as taking time out for yourself each day – can refer to many things.  But first, let's step back for a moment.

How do you define success?  One way to describe success is to equate it to happiness.  So, using that measuring stick, the happier you are, the more successful you are.

Success And Happiness

And why not.  Isn't that really the whole point of being alive – to be happy and feel good about your life day by day, moment by moment?  To feel successful?

So the point of a daily personal development practice then, in our mind, is to develop a set of ongoing habits in your life that assist you in being successful.  Which means that through a daily personal development practice, you will become happier.  Because by being happy you are successful.

So here then, are what we've come to believe are the key elements of an effective daily personal development practice.

  1. Goal setting
  2. Visualization
  3. Meditation
  4. Seeking wisdom
  5. Exercise

Personal Development Book Recommendation

The Power of Intention by Dr. Wayne Dyer

The Power of Intention

For me, this book is an absolute pre-requisite for any serious student of self growth and personal development.

One of the lessons I find myself continuously being reminded of is to not let my ego get in the way of my being successful.

Like most of the people on this planet, I've been subjected

to a lifetime worth of conditioning which leaves me predisposed to ego based thinking.  And yet it is the very same ego based thinking that leads to thoughts which don't serve me and which fuels the negative vibrations that they carry.

And of course, based on the Law of Attraction, it is positive vibration that I wish to be focused on generating at all times.

In his book "The Power of Intention", Dr. Wayne Dyer talks about this.  He talks about the need to let go of your ego in order to stay in alignment with the power of intention and more easily manifest into your experience that which you desire.

According to Dr. Dyer, ego is simply an idea you have about who you are that you carry around with you.  This idea of who you think you are is an obstacle to your ability to connect with intention because it reinforces the notion that you are separate from everyone and everything in the world around you.

Of course, we already know this is not true.

We are all part of an interconnected system, consciousness, and life force; quantum physics proves this.  Ego based thinking becomes an impediment to connecting with intention and letting it flow freely to you.  You become a “dis-allower” rather than an “allower”.

In his book, Dr. Dyer identifies 7 steps for overcoming the hold ego has on you:

  1. Stop being offended.  Being offended only leads to attack and counter attack.  It in no way serves you.
  2. Let go of your need to win. There are no losers in a world that shares the same energy source.  Ironically, the less you pursue winning the more you will win.
  3. Let go of your need to be right.  Would you rather be right or happy?
  4. Let go your need to be superior.  This only leads to resentment and hostility.
  5. Let go of your need to have more.  You live in a world of abundance and should focus on creating, attracting and then letting it go.  It's in the giving that you receive.
  6. Let go of identifying yourself on the basis of your achievements.  Hold no attachment to the outcome since this is a negative attractor.
  7. Let go of your reputation.  You have no control over how others think about you and it doesn't matter.  All that matters is that your be true to your own intuition and integrity.

If you haven't already read Dr. Dyer's book, I strongly recommend you pick up a copy and give it a read.  If you already have read it, read it again.  You will find new meanings and perspectives that you can apply directly to your own personal development and success.
